“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.” - [Quran, 24:35]

Sabriya Shakir
A tradition says that a child’s first school is in the mother’s lap. As a mother, I want my children, and all seekers of knowledge, to know that there are many avenues at their fingertips for completing their higher education- that no mountain is too high. Whether a traditional or nontraditional student, the ability to complete a college education should be afforded to all. However, far too often, financial roadblocks impede the attainment of educational dreams. I am eager to serve as a board member of Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation so that I may directly impact students by providing the opportunity to attend college while relieving them of major financial constraints.
My own educational journey was initially a rocky one. Fortunately, my mother, my hero, showed me how to persevere even in the hardest of times. As an LSF board member, I am inspired by purpose, to serve as a voice, and to encourage students to believe in themselves and know that there are people ready and willing to help the Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation achieve its mission.
